Planning -Flat Planning - Whole Magazine Plan- Analysis
So that i could really understand the content of my magazine i created a flat plan of the whole magazine to show what i believe would be in my magazine. This would show that i know what my magazine is about and would give the audience a feel of what they would expect in my magazine. This part of the project took time , as i wanted to ensure the content of my magazine linked and the pages would compliment eachother. I researched some unsigned band and artists who i think could be in my magazine and then i came up with titles of the pages that they would come under. I looked at band and artists from different genres - so there would be something for everyone! Hoever they all had one thing in common , which is they love making music and what people to hear what they are about.

Research - Audience Research - Qualitative data- Interview
For this part of my research i interviewed five men aged between 19-25. They were friends of my cousins and all interested in music. Therefore i would be able to get some good responses from them to make my music magazine want they would want to read. I began by asking them about if they have read music magazines in the past?. Most of them said that they had read NME a couple of times but one of them said they were a 'religious reader' of kerrang. I then asked them what appeal does reading a music magazine have? They all agreed that by reading a music magazine you can find out about your favourite bands and get to know them. One of them commented that 'you can find out where they are playing next'. They all nodded their heads and said that they read magazines to find out about festivals and gigs. One of them named ben said that 'if you read a music magazine you can often find out first where a band is playing , which gives you a chance to get tickets before anyonelse'.
Amongst the group they all had different taste in musics. One commented that 'it would be hard to get a magazine that all of us would read because i like indie music and them two take the mic and call me an emo whilst they listen to their hardcore rap and think they are gangstas'. I then went on to ask have any of you ever been interested in a band or artist that has not been signed? One replied that 'whenever we go to gigs there is always a warm up act and sometimes i think they are pretty decent and then i go home and look them up on the net'. After he made this comment i asked would you read a magazine full of new musical talent?. They all agreed that they would and gave me the idea that it would be good if in the magazine you could tell us where to find them on the net so we could listen to their music.
We then began to speak about how the internet has many sites full of undiscovered musical talent and why they thought that no magazine had been made. ' I think its because on the internet you can watch videos of them and see them perform , on a magazine you can judge them by what they look like and say but to like their music you have to hear them'. I agree that this is a point and thats why the interviews within the magazine would have to make the reader want to go and listen to them. What kind of questions would you want to be asked to the new talent in the magazine so you find out about them? ' They would almost have to sell themselves to me'. Another commented 'I would want to know about their musical influences and what where they think they would fit within music'. In many music magazines you hear about fashion and style do you think an artist should have a double page spread about their style influences in a music magazine? ' That sounds like a girl thing or something that you would see in glamour magazine' They all agree and say that a music magazine should be about music. 'I dont want to know how to achieve their look for a lower price like you see in some fashion magazines'.
Do you think the factor that the artists/bands featured in the magazine , being not famous will effect people buying it?. This question took thema minute to think about and then one of them said ' well talent shows like the x factor show people who are not famous so what will stop a magazine from showcasing people with musical talent who are neither famous' . 'If anything people will be intrigued to find out who they are and will pick up the magazine'. After this comment i began thinking about the front page and what stands out to them. What do you first notice when you look at a cover of a magazine?. ' The main photograph and the colours'. ' I like a magazine that does not have loads of cramped writing on top of eachother and has a good format which will look the same whenever i buy it but with different information'.
What do you think would make a male of your age buy a music magazine?. At first they made comments about a half naked women but then became serious again and said ' i think just being to the point , we just want to know what they are about , why they do it and where we can see them' Another agrees, 'we are not really interested in how they were bullied at school , unless it relates to how they show this through their lyrcis'. 'Thats why i dont watch X factor , because they produce the same kind or artists'. What kind of bands/artists do you want to hear about then? 'we all go out together at a weekend and like going to watch gigs so we will try anything once, we're not really into hard rock but we will give anything a go'. We begin to speak of female artists such as Ellie Goolding who won best newcomer in 2009. 'yeah shes got a good voice and im not ashamed to say i like her' .How much would you pay for a magazine for new musical talent?. 'well i would say the cheaper the better but if it is a good magazine then i would pay anything up to two quid'. Do you prefer a magazine with many pages filled with lots of information or a shorter magazine that comes out more often with a smaller number of main features? . They said that they would much prefer a shorter magazine , that is produced often with a few bands/artists featured each issue so that they can get to know them rather than a magazine full of new bands/artists. They said we just like to 'pick it up , flick through and read the things we want to read'. ' We do not have the time to go through a massive magazine full of article after article' . ' The massive magazines make me think of hello and okay which are more gossip which i dont really want to read. ' I would much prefer a shorter magazine with a few bands/artists who i can then go and reasearch rather than pages and pages of stuff that i dont really wanna know'.
How often would you like the magazine to be sold? ' Im not the type of person to buy a magazine every week so maybe every two weeks' ' yeah thats what i think because if you want new musical talent you need time to find it so every week would not be enough time and if you did one every month then i think i would loose interest as i would of forgoten about it'. If you could tell me one thing that i could do to make this magazine a success then what would it be? ' I think if you include a variety of acts then it would work'. ' If you make sure that it looks good and is appealing to the eye then i would pick it up'. ' For me it would be about knowing where i can watch them and what venues they are playing' . ' Yeah and knowing about why they do what they do.' A good looking girl always works too ( they then all looked at eachother and laughed)
This interview was useful as it gave me the chance to have an indepth conversation with a sample of my target market.

Research - Audience Research- What have i learnt?
After conducting my audience research i have learnt that music magazine dedicated to new musical talent could be successful. There is so much diversity in musical taste and i want to be able to create a music magazine full of talent where there is something for everyone. From my survey analysis i found out that everybody is interested in new musical talent and from speaking to those around me i found out that the music scene is constantly changing and by promoting new talent we can keep the music scene fresh and an industry that is always producing new talent. Another thing that i have learnt is that people believe that the magazine should be about musical inspirations and it should find out about why these new artists believe that they can make it in the industry.
The quantative side of my research was the survey i produced. The qualative side was when i interviewed a group of my cousins 19-25 year old male friends. I completed this qualative research as i wanted to find some evidence that was aimed directly at my target market. The quantative side of the research was useful as i could create quick results and view the percentages which resulted in me knowing straight away what they thought. The qualatitive data was useful as it meant that i could go into more detail with questions and find out different opinions in comparison to one word answers.
From the survey results i was able to analyse the findings and what this resulted in for my music magazine. For example i found out the majority of the people who took my survey listened to indie/alternative music the most. However this answer could be described as limited. Therefore in the interview i was able to ask questions about music taste and i found out that many people have a variety of tastes, this i could not find out in the survey as there was only a one answer box option. The interview is useful as it was a conversation between me and members of my target audience. This in comparison to a survey which had answers from others showed that the answers i recieved were directly from the people who would be the audience of my magazine. The feedback i recieved from both types of research was similar - which is great because it shows that there is continuty in my feedback and i can create a magazine which is justified by good reliable research.
From the interview i found out that many of my target audience like to go to festivals and gigs. This has taught me that a page dedicated to upcoming music events would work well in my magazine. They also told me that when they go to gigs they often find new music talent there in the warm up performers. They said that they often go home and look up the performers to find out more about them. From both pieces of research i found out that the presentation of the magazine is important. In my analysis of the survey i talked about how photographs are what the audience notices first.

Research - Similar Texts - Unsigned Artists Websites
From looking around many shops i have noticed that there is currentley no magazine that is directley similar to the one i plan to create. One of hand this is a good thing as it means i will have no competition. To contrast the question arises , Why is there no magazine of this genre? However from surfing the internet i have found many websites that are dedicated to new musical artists. This could be because the internet is used by everyone daily and that some people would prefer to search for new talent online , where they can see videos of the artists. I also noticed that many of the websites are targeted at particular genre of talent. At first i believed that i could create a music magazine advertising all kinds of talent. However i have now come to the conclusion that this may be difficult to achieve as it would be hard to create a magazine that showcased a new girl band called 'Kandy' whi target 15 year old girls alongside a hard rock group named 'Pain'.
I decided to browse the website and have a look at some of the unsigned music websites and see how they work which would lead to me getting some ideas about what i could use in my magazine. One of the websites i came across was http://www.totallyunsigned.co.uk/
This site promotes new talent and lets you become a member so that you can keep up to date with new bands. This website also has a chart of top singles and artists so that the public can see who they believe is making music worth listening too.

Research - Audience Research - Quantative data - Music Magazine Survey
To ensure that my creative decisions have evidence behind them i created a survey on http://www.surveymokey.com/ to find out what members of the public think. This would increase my knowledge of what the audience would want which would lead to me making the correct decisions and being able to create a succesful music magazine. After i had created the survey i posted the link of to my facebook and waited for the responses. The link for the survey i created is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D9V5KG3
1) How old are you?
13-15
16-18
19-25
25+
I chose this age ranges as i believed that 13-15 is the tweenies age where people are entering the young teenage stage of their life. Then 16-18 as these are late teens where a person begins to feel more like an adult. Following this i used the age 19-25 as this is the target market for my magazine and the beginning of adulthood. Finally the age 25+ so that anyone older could take the survey but not be embarassed about their age.
Results
13-15 = 26.7%
16-18 = 13.3%
19-25 = 33.3%
25+ = 26.7%
Analysis
From these results i have learnt that the majority of people to take my survey were between the ages of 19-25. This is a good thing as it means that many of my target audience answered this survey so i will have a good knowledge of what they would want in a music magazine. The lowest percentage of people to take my survey are 16-18 year olds which could be seen as a bad thing as they are closest in age to my target audience and may also buy my magazine.
2) Are you?
Male
Female
This question was important as i believe the magazine i will create will be more of an interest to males. However by asking this question and getting female responses i can see whether this judgement was correct and if women would also enjoy reading about new musical talent.
Results
Male =46.7%
Female =53.3%
Analysis
From these results i can see that slightly more females took the survey in comparison to men. This may be a problem as i decided that men would be my target audience and perhaps will result in me having to create more audience research targeting only men. However as i said previously it is good to see both opinions as women may also be interested in new musical talent.
3) Which genre of music do you most like listening to?
Pop/Rock
Metal/Hardcore
Pop/Punk
Pop/Dance
Drum n Bass
Indie/Alternative
Classical
Country/Folk
For this question the audience had to select one answer so that i could have a knowledge of what genre of music is popular at the moment. I gave a selection of answers to add variety and by finding out the popularity of music i would have an understanding of what the audience of want to hear and no more about at the moment.
Results
Pop/Rock=13.3%
Metal/Hardcore=6.7%
Pop/Punk=0%
Pop/Dance=26.7%
Drum n Bass=6.7%
Indie/Alternative=40%
Classical=6.7%
Country/Folk=0.0%
Analysis
From this question i have learnt that indie/alternative is the genre of music that is popular at the moment. Pop/Dance is also very popular. These are aspects that i will have to consider when deciding the musical genre of my magazine. Country/Folk and Pop/Punk both had 0% which shows they are not very popular at the moment or arguebly to the people who took my survey. However the sample i used on facebook are representative of the people i believe my magazine will target.
4) Are you interested in new musical talent?
Yes
No
This question was very important as it is the basis of my magazine. If the results of this question are that the public are not interested in new musical talent then i would have a problem as they would not be interested in my magazine.
Results
Yes = 100%
No= 0%
Analysis
The results for this question showed me that everyone who took my survey are interested in new musical talent. This means that my magazine , if planned and produced to the audiences taste , can work. As they are interested and want to know about new talent!
5) Do you read/buy music magazines?
Yes
No
I wanted to find out what percentage of people currently read or buy music magazines so that i could become aware of the popularity of them at this moment in time. I used the option read or buy as i am aware that not everybody buys the magazines but the circulation of them can be high which leads to a higher readership.
Results
Yes= 60%
No= 40%
Analysis
The majority of people that answered my survey do read or buy music magazines which shows me that they are popular and can be successful. My guess of the people that dont are those in the age range of above 25. After making this presumption i studied the responses in 'browse responses' and learnt that this was the case.
6) Would you read/buy a music magazine dedicated to new bands/artists?
Yes
No
Again this question was hugely important as it would tell me whether the public would want to read the magazine that i wish to create.
Results
Yes = 73.3%
No = 26.7%
Analysis
The results from this question tell me the majority of the sample would read or buy a magazine dedicated to new musical talent. This tells me that my magazine could be successful if i manage to get the other factors of the magazine correct. The result of this question justifies the choice of genre of my magazine.
7) How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine for new music artists?
£1-£1.50
£1.50-£2
£2-£2.50
£2.50+
This question would help me to understand how much i should price my magazine. Price is an important factor to any product as you have to ensure that you price the magazine on what the content is worth but also a price that the consumer would pay. If you price to high the audience may look elsewhere but if you price to low then you will not make any money. As there is no magazine currently similar to the one i wish to create this means that i can price slightly higher as there is no competition for the reader to go to. One the other hand as my magazine will contain new talent , they will not be famous faces which could reduce the amount i charge.Therefore i need to choose a price that benefits me and the reader.
Results
£1-£1.50= 40%
£1.50-£2= 33.3%
£2-£2.50= 13.3%
£2.50+= 13.3%
Analysis
From the results i can see that the majority believe that £1-£1.50 would be a suitable price. However as the consumer they would want to pay as least as possible which means that this question could be bias. Depending on how often the magazine is produced and how much content there is i will make a decison. One thing i do agree with is that £2.50+ is too much to pay. To contrast i do believe that £1.-£1.50 would be too low. Therefore price is a factor that i will have to conduct more research.
8) What would you expect to be in a music magazine?
Gigs
Interviews
Posters
News
Gossip
Festivals
Competitions
Advertisements
Offers
Facts on bands/artists
Content arguebly the most important factor of a magazine. If you do not include what the reader wants then they will not buy it. Before the public buy a magazine many flick through quickly to see if its worth buying. Therefore you have to include want they want. I gave this question a multiple answer box so that the public could tick as many boxes as they wanted and i could find out want they want to read and see in a magazine.
Results
Gigs = 80%
Interviews = 80%
Posters= 40%
News = 66.7%
Gossip = 40%
Festivals = 80%
Competitions= 46.7%
Advertisements= 33.3%
Offers= 60%
Facts on bands/artists= 60%
Analysis
I have highlighted the most popular answers to show which were the most popular and that i should defintatley include in my music magazine. At the beginning of this project i made the decision to create a new musical talent magazine rather than a music scandal magazine. Therefore i believe that gossip is not going to be a huge factor within my magazine and i should stick with a focus on the music talent and where you can see them at gigs and festivals etc. This idea should work as i believe that females are more interested in gossip and if my magazine is targeted at males they will not be interested in hearing about gossip and scandal. This point is proved in that only 40% of the people who took this survey, expect to see gossip in a music magazine.
9) What would you expect a front cover of a music magazine to be like?
Colours
Classy Format
Simple
Creative
Not too much information
Lots of pictures
Lots of writing
More pictures than writing
The front cover is the first thing you notice when you look at a magazine. It tells you what to expect and creates a feeling/mood of what the ethos of the magazine is. The front cover attracts the reader and you want your cover to stand out against overs in a shop. Getting the front cover correct is key and this question would give me an idea of what the public believe a front cover should be like. The answers given had a multiple choice box so the person taking the survey could select the ones they believed were most important.
Results
Colours= 60%
Classy Format=20%
Simple=6.7%
Creative=73.3%
Not too much information=20%
Lots of pictures= 46.7%
Lots of writing=13.3%
More pictures than writing =53.3%
Analysis
The most popular answers on this question were that the public believe a magazine should be creative, colourful with more pictures than writing. This did not surprise me and has taught me that the front cover has to look special and stand out so that it will attract the public.
10) How often would you expect a music magazine on new musical talent to be sold?
Weekly
Every two weeks
Monthly
This question was important as it would tell me how often they believe that a music magazine of this kind should be sold. For example if the magazine was sold monthly it would have to have more content as it is not sold as often as some. However it may be difficult to create a magazine full of new talent every week.
Results
Weekly= 20%
Every two weeks= 53.3%
Monthly= 26.7%
Analysis
From the results i can see that the public believe that the magazine should be sold every two weeks. This may be the best option as it would be enough time to create a good magazine full of good content and it would not be a huge magazine that is sold monthly
.
1) How old are you?
13-15
16-18
19-25

For this question the audience had to select one answer so that i could have a knowledge of what genre of music is popular at the moment. I gave a selection of answers to add variety and by finding out the popularity of music i would have an understanding of what the audience of want to hear and no more about at the moment.

Pop/Punk=0%
Pop/Dance=26.7%
Drum n Bass=6.7%
Indie/Alternative=40%
Classical=6.7%
Results
Yes = 100%
No= 0%
Results
Yes= 60%
No= 40%
Results
Yes = 73.3%
No = 26.7%
Results
Gigs = 80%
Interviews = 80%
Posters= 40%
News = 66.7%
Gossip = 40%
Festivals = 80%
Competitions= 46.7%
Advertisements= 33.3%
Offers= 60%
Results
Colours= 60%
Classy Format=20%
Simple=6.7%
Creative=73.3%
Results
Weekly= 20%
Every two weeks= 53.3%
Monthly= 26.7%
Analysis
From the results i can see that the public believe that the magazine should be sold every two weeks. This may be the best option as it would be enough time to create a good magazine full of good content and it would not be a huge magazine that is sold monthly

Research - Similar Texts-Content Analysis- X factor Magazine- In depth
The magazine that I have chosen to analyse in depth is ‘X’ magazine. The reason I have chosen to analyse this magazine is because I believe it is a magazine that will be most like the one I want to create as it promotes new talent. I have never read this magazine so I feel it would be beneficial to create an in depth analysis about its content. This will lead to me understanding about what I would like to include in my magazine and can help me to get a clearer judgement about why the magazine publishes what it does. My first impressions is that the magazine will be about X factor contestants and their stories behind the show.
On the front cover there is the X factor logo which automatically makes the reader associate the magazine with the X factor and ITV. ITV is a well known institution and therefore the magazine gains respect from the reader as we know that it has a history of producing media to the masses. The main photograph on the cover is of Diana Vickers who is a former X factor Contestant. The headline reads ‘people think im sweet and innocent’. The text is in pink which has the connotations of ‘girly’ and ‘sweet’ which work well with the headline. To contrast , under the headline in black boxes it says ‘Not likely’ and ‘Meet the real’ Diana Vickers!. This is the magazine showing that celebrities may not be what they seem. By using the colour black (to back the shock headline on)gives the effect of darkness , as if it is a secret she has had to keep about herself. The pose in which she is pulling does not represent a ‘sweet’ , ‘dolly’ type girl. To explain , she is wearing a leopard print dress with a smoky eye and her hair is not all straight and perfect. This represents her as not being the girl which everyone thinks she is. As Diana Vickers found fame on the X factor she has not always been famous and was once just like us! Therefore by saying meet the ‘real’ Diana Vickers , we as the reader feel as if there is still we need to know about her and we will read on to find out. The photograph shows her standing clenching her fist which again goes against the description of ‘sweet’. I get the impression that they want to show Diana as now being grown up and not the young girl that we saw on the X factor. Its as if she wants to break away from the girl and say ‘look at me , I am my own artist now’.
The photograph of Diana has the label ‘Exclusive 2’ over it. This to me was slightly confusing , if she is Exclusive 2 then why have they decided to use her photograph as the main feature of the page and the headline of her being the focus? Then I realise who is Exclusive 1 , “the nations sweetheart“, Cheryl Cole. Cheryl is currently one of the most famous women in Britain and for all aspects of her life. Whether it be fashion, music or the latest affairs which her football husband has had, we all know her and are talking about her. She is also a judge on the X factor so by including her on the front page , it makes the reader want to know more about Cheryl Cole. The photograph used of her overlaps the ’Magazine’ under the X on the Masthead. I believe this is because the magazine wants to promote Cheryl’s new hair colour and also show that she is X factor royalty who is of importance and should only be covered slightly by the promotion of the magazine label ’Only £1.65’.
Also on the cover is the photograph of judge Louis Walsh being clung on to by latest evictee ’Storm’. This represents Louis is a caring way as he is comforting his act. However they have not used a photograph of storm showing his face or a picture of ’Diva Fever’ (who the inside story is actually about). This suggests that they wanted to capture the moment of storms heartbreak exit of the competition and perhaps that they believe the reader would want to read more about storm than they would diva fever as they have not used a photograph of ’Diva Fever’. In brackets they have put ’and an amazing photo of Wagner’. This encourages the reader to open the magazine as they want to see the photograph.
The fourth exclusive is about Justin Timberlake and ’why he is giving up music’. When I first saw JT on the front of this magazine I was slightly confused as I could not find a connection between him and the X factor - except that he is a music artist. However by putting a famous face such as JT the magazine will attract a wider audience as he is a popular music artist with many people. Although this magazine is about the X factor the talent of the contestants is not a main exclusive. In the top right hand corner there is the first real sign that we will get to learn more about them. ’Aiden , Cher , Katie , Their Toughest Week Yet’. So even when we think we will learn more about their musical talents we are corrected that it will be about their struggle on the show rather than the talent they bring.
Although we associate the X factor with Music , this magazine also focuses on ’Stars’ and ’Style’. By using the three ideas as the mast head the magazine gains effect by using the power of three. The small stars in between the words also relate to the content of the magazine and compliment the word ’stars’. From looking at the cover of this magazine I would say that it is targeted at Females. The colour scheme of the cover is pink, yellow, white and black with the red X factor logo. These colours I would generally associate with females. I really like the layout of the front page however I am not too keen on the labelling of Exclusives. I don’t think it works as there are five stories featured on the front page and yet they only label four of them exclusives which leaves the last story about the contestants looking bare as it is the only one to be missing a label. However this could have an under meaning that the label they are missing represents the title of being famous and deserving a label. This bring the reader back to reality that the contestants have not made something of themselves quite yet and it could all be taken away.
When I opened the magazine the first double page spread is an advertisement of a new ’reality’ programme - The only way is Essex. It is a television programme that is also shown on ITV and therefore by advertising another programme within this magazine ITV can raise their profile and awareness. The three people featured on the advertisement are stereotypically good looking. The girls look like models and are both in nice dresses and the man looks handsome and is dressed in a suit. Next to the models are the words ’Gorgeous’ ,’Fast Cars’ ’Short Skirts’ Etc. These are what the show want to present Essex as being like and they believe will appeal to the reader to watch the show. This advertisement reinforces my idea that the magazine is targeted at teenage girls as I believe they are most likely to watch a show about how to get the ‘designer label’ lifestyle described within the advertisement. There is only the black and white text and then the two models colour dresses stand out. The green circle is used to inform about when the show is on. From my research so far I have noticed a common theme which is using shapes to make things on the page stand out. Important information is often placed in a star or a circle which makes it stand out to the reader - it is especially effective when the rest of the page has no other shapes.
Another Advertisement is used - this time to do with fashion. This again makes me believe that this magazine is targeted at females because a fashion store has decided to advertise within the magazine. The advertisement shows another female style icon - Fearne Cotton , modelling a black dress looking happy and confident. This would appeal to the reader as they want to look like her and wear that smile.
This is where I will learn if the magazine is really what I thought it would be. From reading the contents page I know that there will be interviews from ‘James Blunt’ who I would never have associated the X factor with, Russell Howard who is a comedian and again I would never associate with music and I will learn about Brightons style! There seems to be little focus on the X factor itself and I believe that you could take away the name and logo X factor mag and happily replace with Heat or New. The reason for this is that I am not getting the impression they are trying to promote the musical talent - which is what I wish my music magazine to do , instead they are looking around the talent at what they will become and how they can look. On the side of the page it says ‘Each week, a team member fills you in on life at pops most exciting mag’. This is their chance to promote how great it is to be in the presences of Cheryl Cole and let the reader know what they have been doing. I like the look of the contents page and the use of another photograph of Diana Vickers standing on a star reminds the reader that she has hit celebrity status. Her standing on the star reminded me of America when the celebrities have their name engraved on a star , the magazine have chose Diana to stand on in which could be reinforcing the idea that she is not sweet and in fact a rebel by killing the star. I also like the use of colours as the head labels. They capture the readers eye and make the white text stand out.
Finally I reach a story about two of this years contestants but is it about their musical origins and the greatness they aspire to achieve in the industry - Of course it isn’t. Im faced with a huge photograph taking up most of the double page spread of the girls sticking the middle finger to each other. With the headline Katie and Cher ‘Feud Latest’. As I read the piece I learn that there is not actually a feud between the two of them and then a smaller photograph of them is used hugging and embracing each other. I really like the use of the photograph and again the use of the white background makes the two of them stand out. This is another concept that I have learnt from my research so far. Although there is not a huge amount of writing on these two pages the two photographs tell the story itself so I have learnt that photographs express a lot. I also really like the 110% blue label at the top of the page which is featured on many of the pages within the magazine. This links them all together and gives the magazine structure which I think works really well.
This part of the magazine interviews the latest evictees from the show and the photographs tell the story of their departure. Each act is given a page however Diva Fevers interview is shorter - leaving room for the advertisement to download the acts performances. One thing that I really like about this magazine is their use of interviews. The questions they ask are short and to the point but still are inquisitive enough for an in-depth answer. The positing of the photographs across the double page works really well. To explain the photograph of Storm on the left hand side takes up a large amount of space then on the right hand side of the page there is the photograph of Diva Fever below it with more space for the interview above. I believe using this convential layout makes it look as if there is more room on the page less cramped. This magazine definitely uses colour well and the pages show continuity.
All of the pages that are a part of the 110% collection have a white background and a dramatic photograph. This page has three photographs layered on top each other with the interview to the side of the photographs. I believe that although the white background brings effect to whets on the page - it can begin to look boring if there is not some surrounding colour.
Another female targeted advertisement is used. If my magazine is going to be targeted at women I am sure that beauty products , reality TV programmes and cosmetics would benefit most from advertising in my magazine as this is a continuous theme that I have seen throughout this magazine.
Again these two pages are photograph based. As I begin to read this magazine more I am noticing that they use more photographs than they do text. This could tell me something about their target audience. To explain, the magazine is not formal and there are more photographs which may suggest that the readers are not extremely literate or that they prefer to speak through the photographs. On page 12 there is the photograph of boy band ‘one direction’ preparing for their performance. The photograph shows that one of the band members is missing and a choreographer had to stand in his place during the rehearsal. By using this photograph the magazine could be trying to make the reader take sympathy on the band as they had to rehearse without a member. By using the heading ‘One Direction -1’ there is a play on words which adds effect to the name and makes the reader want to know why a member is missing. Also on page 12 there is a photograph of Eliza Doolittle. The photograph of her used shows her smiling and looking straight at the camera , as if she is personally talking to the reader. The phrase ‘I’m backing Mary’ compliments the photograph as it tells you what she is thinking as she directly looks at you. On the bottom of the page there is a blue box (which continues the blue colour scheme) that contains ‘weekend tweets’. In media other peoples perspectives are often important therefore by having a box on the bottom of the page , the reader can find out what other celebrities liked and see if their shared the same opinion. This is effective as it links the reader to the celebrity and brings them closer together, which the reader would like.
On page thirteen a photograph of the contestant Aiden Grimshaw is used. His posture in the photograph shows his hands by his side and his eyes looking worried. This compliments the quote used other his photograph that says ‘I hate to think ive destroyed an amazing song’. Again the magazine could be trying to gain sympathy for Aiden. The photograph they use is powerful because Aiden is dressed like a music artist but he looks frail and concerned about what they public may think. Next to the photograph they have used a smaller photograph of his performance. This reminds the reader of how things went so they can relate to what he is saying. The photograph of his performance looks really effective. Many of the other photographs within the magazine only have a plain background. The strobe lights behind him give the impression of magical and awe inspiring. The small quote within the photograph that reads ‘does anyone know the Heimlich Manoeuvre’ relates to how aiden looks as if he is struggling to breathe. On this page there is an interview with the contestant which allows the reader to learn more about them. The questions asked are mainly about the show rather than their individual music taste. I now believe that the target reader of this magazine are perhaps middle aged women who stay in on a Saturday night and watch the X factor. At first I presumed the magazine was targeted at teenage girls but the more I read into the magazine, my opinion is changing.
This next double page spread is dedicated to Cheryl Cole and her opinion on Louis Walsh. As I mentions previously , Cheryl Cole is known as the ‘nations sweet heart’ as is respected by many of the public. Therefore it would be surprising for a magazine to represent her in a bad way. The huge photograph takes up most of the page and as usual she looks glamorous and innocent. Before even reading the article many people will side with Cheryl as she is seen as being vulnerable and sweet. The other two photographs used show her next to Louis Walsh with a big gap between them , this adds to the meaning of the article , that they are not getting on. The other photograph shows Louis arguing with Cheryl and raising his hands which again makes Cheryl look as if she is being targeted. This part of the magazine follows many traditional codes and conventions that are found in many magazines. For example the first three words of the article are highlighted to add an introduction to what you are about to read. Towards the right hand of page 15 there is a column wrote by Matt Edmundson. Columns are a way of hearing journalists points of view about a subject. However after reading the column I do not think that they have placed it in the correct place , the column is about Wagner and Mary and does not relate to anything else on the page. I believe that this column could have been placed somewhere else in the magazine for more effect.
This double page spread is an interview with one of contestants about his performance on the show. The background of the page is the photograph of Paije performing. It shows him looking very attached and involved in the song. This represents him as being passionate and shows that he wants to be in the competition. By using the photograph as the background we as the reader feel more involved. The other photographs used are placed on top of the background to show how far he has already come. The photographs capture the moment Danii told him he was coming through and this shows his excitement. The scrap book look makes the magazine look more personal as if it is a chapter in their life , which it is. At the side of the interview there is the ‘Six degrees of Simon Cowell’ which shows how he relates to different celebrities. This represents Simon as being an almost God when it comes to showbiz as he is positioned at the top of the page with other famous celebrities such as Mariah Carey below him.
This page in some ways ‘takes the mick’ out of the X factor contestant as they use a photograph of him trying to look ‘macho’ and then label his body parts saying why he makes such a ‘great’ man. I believe this represents him as being a joke and over looks the fact that he is on the X factor because he believes he has talent. The short paragraph below the picture explains how Wagner is not a man he is ‘the man. Again this is a humorous description of the contestant which represents him as being a joke to the competition and the novelty act.
This often happens in magazine advertisements where the advert begins on one page and then continues a couple of pages later. This creates an almost story effect. For example on page 19 we see a picture of a beautiful women with writing across her face to create the graffiti effect. The quote says ‘Could your moisturiser do more to respect your skin?’. By using the word respect it relates to the idea of having the graffiti looking cream across her face. We do not know what the product is or who it is made by so we are intrigued to find out more. Then on page 21 we see the same photograph but with a clear face and the Johnsons product next to it. This makes the reader believe that the product can clear your skin and encourages them to buy it.
Double Page Spread Of Advertising
The businesses advertising on these pages are Jewellers , Cosmetics , Love advice, Make up artists Etc. The only other type of advertisement used is for music phones. This tells us that the readers of this magazine are expected to be interested in these kind of products. For example it is unlikely that you would see an Addidas product being advertised in a Nike Catalogue as they are competitors. To contrast you would see Niva being advertised in a women’s health magazine as they both target the same market of women. Both Institutions can work together to promote each others products , they can find out whether they are a like by looking at each others rate cards which I have previously studied in my research.
Style Page 60-61
Within this music magazine there are pages that look at the artists image. Image is a huge part of the music industry however I did not expect to see a style page in a magazine about new talent. This shows how we judge people when we first see them. Cher Lloyd is already being praised on her style which in some ways over looks her musical talents. She is being commented on how she looks as if she is advertising Nike when if I was reading a new acts magazine I would want to know who most inspires her. This is where I believe the magazine I want to create works. I accept that image plays apart to an artist. However I want to get to know the musical talent and what makes them who they are. I suppose you could argue that image represents a person in itself. However this magazine contains a lot of image and style which makes me think that this is what the audience wants to read. In my questionnaire I could further this idea and see if men are just as interested in what their musical icons wear as much as women are.

Planning - Thinking of a concept - Decision!
After considering the two initial ideas that i had , i believe that the one that i could take a magazine further with is the 'New Music Talent'. The reason for this is that i believe their is currently a gap in the market for this idea and that by choosing to go with my second idea i would have much more competition. I also believe that the second idea was more risk bearing. The reasons for this is that there are wider issues that could cause trouble for the magazine such as 'size zero' and how some celebrities are not role models. I am sure that i will face wider issues with my first idea , however i am more confident that it will be less controversial! The first idea i had is fresh and different. At this current time i believe there is a growing interest in new talent. For example talent shows such as X Factor and Britains Got Talent encourage new musical artists to try and make it on their shows. However i believe that there is a consistent type of winner that appear on shows such as the X Factor. To explain , i have never seen an indie or rock band audition on the show and the winners have always been on the 'pop' genre.Therefore i believe i can create a magazine that show cases talent from the other genre of music. I am aware that i will need to conduct research for this idea however it is my final decision that new talent will be the basis of my music magazine ! There are questions that i need to be aware of for example -
' Why hasn't this been done before?". I am aware that there are internet sites that do this idea. However i want to take it to the next level and publish the information on a magazine so that awareness will grow . I will have to conduct research on why this has never happened.

Research - Top of the Pops - Rate Card
Top of the pops magazine is a 'music' magazine which is arguably more full of gossip and celebrity style. Some would say the magazine focuses more on image and creating ideology in young teenagers mind about how celebrities live. However whatever your attitude is on the magazine the fact is that it sells and people enjoy reading it. So who are their audience? Well from their rate card i have learnt that 85% of TOTP's readers are girls. This did not shock me, as from analysing their covers and being an experienced reader i am aware that the content of 'boyband good looks' and 'how to become justin timberlakes dream girlfriend' would appeal to girls more than boys. However is this just be making a prejudice judgement. Even so , the magazine sells more to girls with onluy 15% of their readers being boys. When creating my music magazine i need to decide whether it would be easier to appeal to one gender.
The age of TOTP's readers are 11-15 year olds ( also known as tweenies) . They sell their magazine every four months. In the last blog i commented on NME producing a magazine everyweek. I believe it works for TOTP's mag as it contains more interviews than latest news. This results in them not missing out on giving an exclusive as they focus more on speaking to present stars about other issues , such as the Cover i analysed related to Alexandra Burke 'beating the bullies'. The circulation of the magazine is 104,709 and it has a 344,000 readership.
